Career Description
EKG technicians are non-invasive Cardiovascular specialists, who use electrodes and other specialized electronic equipment to obtain heart readings known as electrocardiographs or EKGs. By attaching electrodes to a patient's chest, EKG technicians are able trace and record electrical impulses transmitted by the heart, which are later reviewed by a physician to evaluate the condition of the patient's heart.

About 3 out of 4 cardiovascular technicians, including EKG technicians, work in hospital cardiology departments, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rest work in physician offices and laboratories, including diagnostic imaging centers.

Educational Requirements
Most EKG technicians attend a one-year certificate program at a community or technical college or are trained on the job by a cardiologist or EKG supervisor at a hospital, doctor's office, or clinic. A high school diploma and some form of formal training are mandatory for employment. Many employers prefer allied health professionals with EKG training.
