Career Description
Emergency medical technicians provide emergency medical care at the scene of an injury or traumatic event. They usually are dispatched by 911 operators and often work in conjunction with police and fire department personnel.

With additional training, EMT-Basics (EMT-1) can become EMT-Intermediates (EMT-2 and EMT-3) and EMT-Paramedics (EMT-4), which not only diagnose the injured on-scene and provide immediate medical attention, but also transport and admit them to emergency rooms and other trauma centers and interface with hospital personnel. EMT work is both physically demanding and emotionally stressful, as EMTs often face traumatic, life-and-death circumstances.

Educational Requirements
Emergency medical technicians must undergo formal training and credentialing in all 50 states. Registration with the National Registry of Emergency Technicians is required in most states. States that do not require NRET-registration have their own credentialing process and examination.

Each level of EMT competency (EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic) requires additional education, ranging from one-year certificate programs to two-year associate of applied science degrees.
