The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that phlebotomists earn from $18,720 to $25,168, with a median salary of $21,944. A 2002 survey conducted by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) reported that phlebotomy technicians earned a median hourly wage of $10.55.
Starting Phlebotomy Technician Salaries
The average starting phlebotomy technician salary, nationally, is $20,000, according to What2Be.Net. Delta College estimates that starting phlebotomist wages are between $8 and $10.30 per hour.
Certification and Phlebotomy Technician Salaries
Certification is not a requirement of employment for phlebotomy technicians; however, it can increase a phlebotomist's earnings. Several national organizations, including the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Sciences (NAACS), offer certifying examinations. Salary levels are affected most by occupational setting (hospitals, blood banks, and private laboratories), experience, and state/area of residence.
Career Description
Phlebotomy technicians collect and process a patient's blood for future use or analysis. Working as part of a lab team, they are trained to draw blood samples for medical tests and blood donations. They also must also keep careful records of blood tests.
Phlebotomy requires significant patient contact. At times, for example, phlebotomy technicians must calm nervous patients. Employment can be found in a number of settings, including doctors' offices, hospitals, clinics, blood banks, and independent laboratories.
Educational Requirements
Becoming a phlebotomy technician requires a high school diploma or equivalent and usually three months or more of specialized training, either on-the-job or through a formalized program. Phlebotomy training includes venipuncture, record keeping, and sample safety.
As mentioned above, certification is not a requirement of employment. However, certification is available through programs approved by organizations such as the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Sciences or the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
